Chris Dowell, Secretary of Friends of York Walls, has been discussing with Radio York’s Jonathon Cowap on air today the impending closure during the week of Cliffords Tower by English Heritage in the winter from November to April.

Cliffords Tower

I have been in discussion with a Charity based in Harrogate, Avalon, who have put forward a business plan to take over the running of Cliffords Tower to English Heritage.

There has been a lot of media attention of Friends of York Walls which is very welcome, however the subject of the attention is very worrying. We will continue to lobby Local, Regional and National politicians to overturn this decision with regards to the future of Cliffords Tower.

Friends of York Walls has made a bid for support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to refurbish the 500 year old Postern Tower and give it a new lease of life as a visitor centre and cafe. City of York Council has been asked to provide funding to complete repair work, which is essential to the heritage fund bid, to the ancient four storey building on the corner of Fishergate and Piccadilly.
