York Walls Festival 2018

PRESS  RELEASE

Community groups across York are working together to stage the first ever York Walls Festival, on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August, 2018. Volunteers from the Red Tower group and Friends of York Walls, supported by Jorvik and City of York Council, are looking forward to celebrating and promoting this much-loved attraction. The launch event on the Friday evening, likely to be held at York St. John University will feature a talk by John Oxley, City Archaeologist, and a visit from the Lord Mayor of York.

Saturday will see a host of guided walks, events and open days across the city centre, giving the public the chance to find out more about parts of the three-mile circuit they might not often visit. For children there will be a Walls Passport to collect stamps for as they make their way around the city. A detailed programme will be issued later in July, and people can stay in touch via:

One of the organisers,  Martin Hetherington (Friends of York Walls) said:  “It’s great to be working with other local groups who are passionate about sharing the city’s heritage with the public. Visitors will be able to see inside all the main gates on a single day. Plans are advancing for a York Walls Visitor Centre at Fishergate Postern Tower, and a display there will show progress to date.”
